Holiday Health

by Melissa on December 13, 2011

It just hit me today…my diet is being affected by the holidays.  Yep, it even happens to me.  I was walking home after eating out for yet the umpteenth time in the past few weeks thinking about how I’m going to do better tomorrow.  Then it dawned on me… holiday parties, cookie baking, and comfort foods are interrupting my daily routine.

How do you stay sane!?  How do you not come out on the other side looking like a stuffed pizzelle cookie!?

My friends, I have a few tips, that way we can print them out, put them on the fridge and remind ourselves of ways to keep it together during the holidays :)

#1 Make a menu.

Yep, this is one that they recommend year round, but I think it’s even more relevant now.  After eating out for 2 days and having a holiday party, it can be difficult to remind yourself to grocery shop for healthy foods and actually cook them.  So put it on a list, write it down, and make it part of the weekly menu.  That way, when leftovers are gone, you’re not running for the next take-out box in site.

#2 Pick and Choose.

What meal/snack will you indulge in?  Will you have your holiday party dinner and keep lunch lean and light? Will you eat a cookie or two with a cup of hot chocolate and eat your normal healthy dinner?  Prioritize the foods that you want to indulge in and those that you would rather have a healthier option.  This should also go on when you make your menu for the week.

#3 Fit in Fitness

Duh.  I know, I know.  But hear me out.  Get a walk in.  Do 10 minutes of pushups, sit ups, squats, and lunges watching a holiday movie.  Plan a fitness class or gym date into the weekly menu.  Just make it a priority, you’ll thank yourself, and it will help with the holiday stress.

It’s only a few.  But, these tips are ones that I’m going to try to stick to and will be living by for the next few weeks.

Do you have any great ways you stay healthy through the holiday?

On anther note!  I went to visit Mario this weekend in DC!!!  It was such a nice weekend.

His company party was this weekend, so we got to get all spiffed up and fancy!

IMG_0146I had a blast meeting the people he works with, plus the view was awesome!  They booked a hotel with a room called “Windows Over Washington” which included a view of the monuments at night.

Also, I took my first run on the C&O Canal with Mario.

IMG_0142I can’t believe what a beautiful weekend we had for early December.

Hope it’s not too cold where you are!  Getting back into State College, I woke up to a brisk morning in the mid teens…BRRRRR!!!

Oh and here you go.  You can thank me later for sharing this with you ;)
