As a dietitian and health advocate, I’ve long touted the benefits of cleaning up what we put into our bodies. From following the EWG’s dirty dozen and clean fifteen, to reading ingredient labels.
Now, we’re learning more about the benefits and importance of cleaning up the rest of our lives, including the cleaning products we use in our homes, the fragrance in candles or perfumes, and the cosmetics and skin care essentials that help us look and FEEL our best. Did you know that to put a new cleaning product or skin care product on the market, the company does not have to do any health studies to confirm their safety? Our skin is our largest organ, and we absorb a lot through it each day. Most of us use 10 to 15 products per day (think toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, hand wash, etc). It’s time to rethink our routines.
We’ve slowly been doing this in our household. When we run out of one product, we look for a safer, cleaner alternative. If you’re looking in your cabinets and makeup bag and thinking “wow, I have a long way to go!”, that was me too. It’s taken since early 2018 to switch most of our products. Some of them I’m still searching for an alternative that I love (I’m looking at you deodorant).
The easiest switch for me though was with my skin care. In my teens, I struggled with acne, and then as I went through college and my early twenties, it turned into cystic acne. Now, I deal with scarring, hormonal acne, oil, and I’m starting to think about wrinkles (*face palm*). I had seen quite a bit about BeautyCounter, and had followed them for a few years. I admired their work in advocacy and education. When you know better, you do better. So, I ordered a few products, including the balancing oil. Yes, you read that right! Oil. I NEVER in a million years thought I would put oil on my acne prone, oily face.
After a few weeks, my skin was less irritated, I noticed bumps going away, and I was wearing less makeup overall. I felt confident going to the gym in the morning without makeup! As my other skin care products have run out, I’ve now switched completely to all natural products, many of which are BeautyCounter.
I believe not only has my skin improved because I’m using quality products but also because the products I’m now using have safer ingredients. Irritations I once saw are lessened or even eliminated. Cleaning up my beauty regimen has been so very worthwhile!
